Osun
State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola has granted state pardon to 4 inmates of federal
prisons in Ilesha, Osun State, Ibara in Abeokuta, Ogun State and the Kirikiri
Maximum Security Prison, Lagos who were sentenced to death by court.
This
was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions in
Osun who is also the Secretary to the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of
Mercy, Mr Adedapo Adeniji and made available to journalists by the Information
officer in the Osun State Ministry of Justice, Mr Opeyemi Bello.
Two
of the prisoners, Kolawole Adediji and Adelowo Adediji who had been sentenced
to death were freed by the governor while the two others, Ekanade Muyiwa and
Adewole Olusoji were commuted from death to twenty years (20)
imprisonment.
According
to the statement, the inmates were pardoned as part of the commemoration of the
New Year 2017.
Adeniji
said the action of the governor was in pursuant to the advice and
recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
He
said “The Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, exercising his
powers under the section 212 (1) (a) of the Constitution of Federal Republic of
Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”
