Fountain University holds pre-Ramadan lecture

Fountain University, Osogbo (FUO) held a pre-Ramadan lecture at its campus as part of activities to sensitise students, staff and members of public on the significance and benefits of month of Ramadan and the fasting.
A lecturer at the Department of Actuarial and Insurance, University of Lagos, Dr. Tajudeen Yusuf who delivered the pre Ramadan lecture emphasised on the need to educate Muslims properly and guide against dangerous radical views among the students.
Yusuf urged the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) to always check Muslim clerics who held radical views that may be contrary to Islamic teaching and inimical to national development.

Dr. Yusuf also advised the NSCIA on the need to translate the Holy Quran to various Nigerian languages so that people can read and understand the words of God on their own.

The university Don added that NSCIA should encourage Muslim clerics to always promote religious tolerance in their teachings in the interest of unity and harmony among the citizenry.

According to him, the failure of Islamic leaders in the country to check some individuals who spread certain dangerous views on the pretext of Islamic teachings emboldened those who founded the Boko Haram sect and misled their followers.

He also urged Muslim clerics to always make comment and public statements on issues including education, political, economic and religious issues rather than talking only during Ramadan.

"What brought about the Boko Haram? It is lack of leadership. Anybody can just say anything or teach anything. Everybody turned themselves into Muslim cleric, nobody cautioned them. But when the Boko Haram came, didn't they kill Muslims? People were praying inside mosques and they opened fire on them. Leadership failure brought about the emergence of Boko Haram”.

The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Bashir Raji also urged Muslims to develop interest in politics while urging those in position of authority to show leadership by example.
