An umbrella body for all civil rights
groups in Osun State under the aegis of Osun state Civil Societies Coalition has
called for the immediate release of the 180 members of the Justice and Equity Organization
(JEO) that were arrested in Imo state on Thursday.
The Coalition also faulted the Imo
State Command of the Nigeria Police for parading the election observers like
common criminal despite that the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) accredited them to monitor the election in Anambra state.
Addressing a press conference by
the Coalition at its secretariat in Osogbo, its Chairman, Comrade Biodun
Agboola condemned the arrest of the 180 election observers on their way to Akwa
in Anambra state
He explained that the
organization applied for the election observation from INEC and it was granted
with its name appearing on the list of election observers and thereby expressed
worry on the arrest of the members.
Agboola appealed to the Inspector
General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar to investigate arrest and order release
of the detained election observers without further delay.
Also, the Committee for Democracy
and Rights of the People (CDRP) in a press release signed by its Acting
National Coordinator, Comrade Saka Waheed condemned the arrest of the accredited
observers.
According to CDRP “this arrest
and detention of well-meaning Nigerians and pro democracy activist, who have
sacrificed their time and comfort to safeguard our democracy and electoral
integrity is an electoral aberration and it must be condemned by all.
