New Ooni: Osun govt, kingmakers settle for Giesi ruling house

Osun State Government and the Ile-Ife kingmakers have resolved that the Giesi Ruling House would produce the next Ooni of Ife and the screening of the would-be Ooni is under way.

                                                    The late Ooni, Oba Sijuwade

It was learnt that the state government would formerly write Giesi Ruling House to present suitable candidates for the Ooni stool to the kingmakers out of whom the government would pick the person that would ascend the throne.

It would be recalled that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse died at Saint Mary Hospital, United Kingdom on July 28th, 2015, after a brief illness.

A source at a meeting attended by Ife kingmakers at Osun Government House in Osogbo on Friday night disclosed that the Giesi Ruling House was favoured by the 1979 and 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration which spelled out the rotational system among the four ruling houses entitled to the throne.

The spokesperson of Giesi Ruling House, Prince Adelowo Adekunle Ogunleye told our correspondent that screening of interested Princes from the Giesi is still on and that names would be forwarded to the kingmakers as soon as the ruling house receives letter from government to nominate candidates.

He noted that the Giesi Ruling House Ruling House has not disqualified any applicant from all the 8 royal families under it and that interested princes from the ruling House were still submitting their application to vie for the Ooni stool.

According to Adelowo, “We have not disqualified any applicant from vying for the throne of Ooni of Ife because every prince from Giesi Ruling House is free to show interest. We have received application from interested princes and we are already screening them to determine the eligibility of every one of the applicants. There is no doubt that it is our turn to produce Ooni and we shall produce the best candidate who would become the next Ooni of Ife”.
